The Vital Principle
"Without the vital force the material organism is capable of no sensation, no function, no self-preservation as it derives all sensation and performs all the functions of life solely by means of the immaterial being (the vital principle) which animates the material organism in health and in disease.
Footnote: It is dead, and now only subject to the power of the external physical world, it decays, and is again resolved into its chemical constituents."
Every living creature represents billions of years of the evolutionary growth by the vital force through the cellular organism. On this basis the principle of self-awareness developed to the point where it became able to employ the physical structure for its own purposes. This establishes the principle of free will that has reach its highest biological development in the conscious mind of a human being. The vital force and the physical organism are a functional polarity of the life principle. Vide Organon.
Unity of the Life
"The organism is indeed the material instrument of life but it is not conceivable without the animation imparted to it by the instinctively perceiving and regulating dynamis, just as the vital force is not conceivable without the organism, consequently the two together constitute a unity, although our thinking mind separates this unity into two distinct conceptions for the sake of easy comprehension".
Hahnemann's biomedical model is in complete harmony with his view of metaphysics and philosophy. Until as late as 1930 many biologists upheld the vitalist theory so it is only natural that they have reintroduced this idea into the modern scientific field. The electrodynamic aspect of a biological organism has been validated by modern research into the bioelectrical fields of the body. It has been found that the subtle electromagnetic fields of living organisms are very complex and are an important factor in controlling growth and morphogenesis. The electrodynamic fields are as force that help maintain a stable pattern during the constant flux of the physio-chemical transactions that take place in the organism. The interdependence of the electrodynamic field and the atomic components of molecules are such that one can not be conceived without the other. In biology there can be no doubt that the electromagnetic phenomenon a medium for unity, integration and continuity.
Over the years the theory of the vital force has fallen out of favor with the materialistic minded who long ago separated the mind and body into independent categories. These existentialist scientists interpreted the Darwinian theory of evolution as the final proof that all spiritual myths were dead. Little known to many of these individuals, Darwin 's also studied metaphysics and philosophy. The new materialist scientists asked, "What type of human soul could there be if humans evolved from monkeys?" Many proudly refuted Biblical creation and stated "God is dead". To them human beings are nothing more than the fittest and most dominant of the animals. Evolution of species is nothing more than a battle than human beings won by conquering nature. Metaphysics and science were presented as enemies rather than as complementary inquiries. Are the Christian fundamentalist's creation story or the atheist's interpretation of the -Darwinian theory the only way to view our origins? Fortunately not!
In Search of the Vital Force
The early Greek philosopher, Xenophanes (520 BC.), taught that the universe was overseen by a Supreme Being who operated the universe by the power of thought. He felt that the human consciousness reflected the creative thought of the universal mind because they were One. He also discovered fossils of prehistoric sea creatures in the hills and postulated that all life had evolved out of the sea. From this we can see that modern humans are not the first people to think about such things! Where can a today's vitalist look for a balanced understanding of evolution, divinity, and the nature of the vital force?
The great Anaxagoras taught that a supreme mental force organizes the matter of the universe in a system comparable to a living organism.. In this way our cells, our bodies, our minds, our planet, our solar system, and the entire universe are all organisms within organisms linked interdependent through the oneness of the vital force. The ancient Greek myth that our planet is a living organism has been resurrected as the "Gaia Hypothesis", formulated by British atmospheric scientist, James Lovelock, and the American microbiologist, Lynn Margulis. In this theory the microorganisms, plants and animals that inhabit the Earth control its climate and surface environment. In living Earth theory all the functions of our planet are part of an intricate web of self-regulating activities that maintain a constant state of balance. Within our environment all inorganic and organic substances are considered to be part of one large planetary organism. In the same way that our inner world is made up of many symbiotic organisms, human beings are living within a larger planetary organism
The origin of life was in the ancient Precambrian seas around four billion years ago. It was in an atmosphere with no oxygen that the first single cellular organisms developed as a simple form of blue green algae cell called the prokaryote. They were the first organisms to develop the ability to adapt to their environment and provide their own life force and procreative power. They developed the ability to use carbon dioxide and other gases in the primitive atmosphere by photosynthesis, and in the process they gave off oxygen into the environment of the planet. These first cells had no nucleus and multiplied themselves by cellular division. After two billion years of adaptation these plant organisms created the biological and ecological conditions necessary for the next stage of evolution.
As the oxygen in the oceans and air began to reach the present day levels there appeared another single cellular organism called eukaryotes that have a nucleus containing chromosomes with genetic material. The symbiotic merging of the prokaryotes with certain spiral shaped bacteria created the new living cell. Within the eukaryotes the prokaryotes became the organelles with the bacteria acting as the flagella of a new photosynthetic cell, the chloroplast.
Thus the experience of two billion years of adaptation by the prokaryotes was integrated into the new life of the eukaryotes, yet the prokaryotes still retained their own separate DNA, RNA and self-replicating abilities. In the chloroplasts of today's plants the prokaryotes still carrying out the same function of exchanging carbon dioxide for oxygen that their ancient relatives did 4 billion years ago. For one billion years these symbolically synthesized organisms lived together and multiplied through cellular division oxygenating the planet and making it ready for the next spontaneous leap of evolution.
About one billion years ago when the ancient seas were teaming with plant plankton a new species of animal organisms arose through symbiosis. In animal plankton the cholorplasts were replaced with the mitochondria found in all animal cells. The functions of the mitochondria are complementary to the plant choloroplasts as they breathe oxygen and give off carbon dioxide as a waste. The animal plankton feed on plant plankton and breathed the oxygen in the oceans. Slowly animal new cells formed more complex multicellular organisms and began to proliferate through ***ual reproduction. This caused the rapid development of the genetic material of these organisms and by the dawn of the Cambrian period six hundred million years ago the oceans were full of animal life. The most common fossils of the sea creatures of this period are of the Trilobites.
Chloroplasts and mitochondria are the outcome of a symbiotic process that began billions of years ago. They act as regulators of the bioenergetic requirements of all the living things on this planet and exist all around us in the cells of every plant and animal of this world. They live in every cell in our bodies where they breathe for every cell we have by activating the cellular energy cycle. The mitochondria were once thought to be the most dynamic part of our cells, but in reality, they have their own DNA and are a separate life form that lives in our body. It is a very interesting to know that a good part of what we though were "our bodies" is really a separate form of life with its own genes. Actually, without these ancient guests in our cells "we" wouldn't even exist!
The human mitochondria are passed on primarily through the egg of the maternal lineage as very few are found in the sperm of a male. In this way women are the custodians of the ancient Earth Mother symbiotic unity as they pass on life within life from within their own bodies. As it is true in the outer environment, it is equally true for the inner ecology of a human being, there are no separate entities because life is based on interdependent origin. Every creature is an integral part of the living environment in which they choose situations that are beneficial for the evolution of the planetary organism. In this way all of creation joins together to regulate the various life forms within the planetary organism and the biosphere. The archetypal image of life being made up of smaller organisms living symbiotically within larger organisms has been in the collective consciousness of humanity since the beginning of time.
The Consciousness Principles
Free will became a primary principle when the self-regulating vital force provided the background for individual experience. The individual manifests as the self-awareness that experiences comfort or distress and possesses the intelligence to transform their environment for the better. From the simplest organism to the most evolved species the vital energy present in a life form is dedicated to the preservation and evolution of life and passing on the best qualities to the next generations. In this way over long periods of time the evolutionary process guides the development of all life within the planetary organism in the direction of maximum potential.
With the arrival of the human consciousness we enter the most recent phase of evolution as this heightened awareness allows individuals and social groups to make conscious decisions. Now the slow and careful changes of evolutionary time have given birth to the creative time within the minds of human beings. Unfortunately, the ecological disasters caused by humanity have begun to look similar to another archetypal myth of the ancient Greeks, the story of the opening of Pandora's Box. Fortunately, what Pandora found in the bottom of the box after her curiosity led her to release all manners of things into the world was the spirit of hope. For without a child-like curiosity there is no experience, and without experience there is no growth, and without growth there is no hope.
STUDY GUIDE: The evolution of the life force through the three worlds is a complementary study to the Genus Materia Medica. Pura The mineral, plant and animal remedies reflect the evolution of the life force within our greater planetary body and the human organism. The inorganic and organic worlds make up a functional polarity that regulates the life principle in the outer and inner worlds. The study of natural sympathies and harmonies form the basis of singatura rerum, the doctrine of signatures. Hahnemann did not consider the signatures associated with the old folk traditions as satisfactory material to be entered in the homoeopathic materia medica. A hypothesis based on the doctrine of signatures must be tested by provings and clinical confirmations to be included homoeopathic materia medica. Areas of future investigation should be entered into the commentaries as a hypothesis rather than as rubrics.
Our study of the Hahnemann's Advanced Methods, Volume 1, Clinical Practice, is closely related to the Genus Materia Medica. These two textbooks are complementary works that can be applied directly to clinical practice. I am beginning a new study of Mother Nature and reading all about the minerals, plants and animals found in our materia medica. I have been investigating the geology, botany and zoology of the Himalayas . Under special observation is the monkey tribe and their temperaments and habits. The close relationship to human beings makes them special. Perhaps, there is a remedy here. If we observe the natural world around us the study of the materia medica will come alive
