توضیحات : بخشی از پیشگفتار کتاب: آیا حقیقت دارد که یک سری سلول‌های ریز به خودی در دریا پدید آمدند و بعد تبدیل به ماهی، خزنده و در نهایت انسان شدند؟ مگر می‌شود انسان با باکتری و گیاه و پرنده فامیل باشد؟ آیا درست که انسان و میمون و شامپانزه از یک خانوادهٔ مشترک هستند؟ این حرف‌ها و ادعاها بر اساس چه مدارکی و اساساً برای چه هدف و منظوری بیان می‌شوند؟ پاسخ به این سوالات و نیز پرسش‌های پیاپی که ذهن شنودگان و خوانندگان نظریهٔ داروین را به خود مشغول می‌دارد، نیاز به پیش‌زمینه‌هایی دارد. ما در این کتاب تلاش کرده‌ایم به طور خیلی خلاصه به این موارد بپردازیم و گرچه ادعای کامل بودن نداریم، اما تلاش خود را کرده‌ایم و امیدوارم کسانی که این پرسش‌ها نیز در ذهن آنها وجود دارد، با خواندن کتاب تا حدودی به جواب قانع‌کننده‌ای برسند. پیش از آغاز بهتر است این جملهٔ کلیدی و مهم نظریه را به خاطر بسپارید: طبیعت به هیچ عنوان به دنبال تکامل دادن موجودات نیست، بلکه تنها موجوداتی قادر به زنده ماند و تکثیر هستند که همزیستی بیشتری با این تغییرات کسب کرده باشند. نظریهٔ تکامل یا صحیح‌تر بگوییم فرگشت۱، توضیح می‌دهد که چگونه نسل همهٔ موجودات از باکتری گرفته تا گیاه و انسان، همواره به دلیل جهش‌های ژنتیکی در حال تغییر و تحول هستند و این تغییرات گرچه بسیار جزئی و ناملموس هستند، اما در طول زمان طولانی (مثلاٌ دویست میلیون سال)، به تغییرات اساسی تبدیل می‌شوند و موجودی متفاوت را پدید می‌آورند. اشتباه بسیاری از منکران نظریهٔ فرگشت این است که تصور می‌کنند این نظریه ادعا می‌کند موجودات تک‌سلولی بر اثر اتفاقات عجیب تبدیل به ماهی شده‌اند، بعد بالهٔ آنها ناگهان تبدیل به دست و پا شده و حیوان از آب بیرون آمده و روی خشکی شروع به خزیدن یا راه رفتن کرده است! اگر می‌خواهید جواب پرسش‌های خود را در مورد نظریهٔ فرگشت بیابید، کتاب حاضر را از اول تا به آخر به طور کامل بخوانید.
