have seen radiators repurposed as towel dryers and mimicked as mugs, but this is my first lamp! Radiant Floor Lamp features an array of lamp elements, modeled after standard-sized fluorescent U-bulbs. As Steve explains, “The path from electricity to light is controlled by a standard water spigot valve handle.” Love it!

Robotic Blocks are not just ordinary robotic toys for children, this robotic toy teaches children about logical thinking. This robotic toy consists of several blocks or modules where children are free to arrange in a way to create simple commands for the robot to do. Ethan Huber, a Chicago based industrial designer, identified the gap in our educational toy market. Yes, there are so many educational toys that teach children to develop logical thinking by programming but there are not many of them successfully attract and interact with children.

By arranging these Robotic Blocks, children can create their own version of robots as well as give them commands or instructions to execute. Each block has a limited set of changeable parameters which correspond to its function, such as move forward for 8 seconds, then another block to make this robot turn 90-degree, and so on. Who knows, these children might be the future Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg.

Kanibot is an innovative robot concept that has been designed to work as a surveillance robot with various handy functionalities. This spider like design of the robot features six mechanical legs with the ability to perform all-way movement, giving the robot the opportunity to go on almost any surfaces. The main body features a powerful camera to capture photos and videos, motion sensor to detect suspicious elements and a tiny antenna to send and receive signals and data to the base station. The glossy black and orange color combination has given the robot an appearance of professional military equipment.

I want to compost but something about the process turns me off. The idea that there’s rotting garbage in a plastic bin on my lawn goes against every thing I deem to be “designed” about my life and to a lesser extent, my yard. Enter the KOMPOST – a ceramic cylinder you bury half way into the ground. Dump your organic matter into the top and thanks to the easy access holes, our friends the worms will turn your garbage into rich compost.

The “Migrant Skyscraper” is literally mobile, a giant, thin tire with a building and green space in the center. The concept behind the structure is in an unstable world, people need the stability of self-sufficiency to truly be free, and the future of architecture can help provide that. By constructing a safe haven for residents ensures they will have food to eat and water to drink, the Migrant Skyscraper affords people freedom despite what natural and social disasters may come.
The building-inside-a-wheel can stay stationary for however long residents please, but, for example, if political upheaval destabilizes a region, residents can fire up the biofuel-powered engine and cruise to a new location. The structure’s exterior tire is clad in recycled rubber. Inside two buildings and surrounding green space provide everything residents need to survive, making the tire-encapsulated unit completely self-sufficient. Outside of the buildings there’s space for agriculture, including crops and livestock; within the tire, plumbing systems circulate potable, gray and black water for drinking, waste facilities and irrigation.

ITRI MediRobot by Pilotfish is a robotic assistant that can lift and transfer patients with limited mobility and assist their caregiver. Traditional lifters have their drawbacks and have to be used in combination with wheelchairs etc. This servo-controlled MediRobot not only helps in transferring the patient from bed to the bathroom (or help in walking) but also displays information like weight and blood pressure collected via sensors on the sling.
The robot allows the caregiver to fully focus on the task of transporting the patient, without the physical strain. It also serves as an infotainment terminal for the patient. This project was conducted in collaboration with Taipei Municipal Yan Ming Home for the Disabled.

Set to hit markets by the end of this year, the IQcook by Gorenje aims to reinvent the way we cook. The magnetic smart sensor, which can be placed on any lid, allows completely safe and controlled cooking while also providing up to 40% power savings. The device syncs wirelessly with the cooking hob to regulate heat so the user can concentrate on the rest of their cooking without having to worry about water boiling over or food being over-cooked. It’s about time we had something like this!

The whole world still revolves around the writing tool – don’t you ever forget it. Designer Matej Korytar hasn’t forgotten it, taking the WACOM brand of digital writing instruments to a new level with the WACOM REALISM project: a pen with many abilities. This pen, an advanced stylus as it were, has the ability not only to instantly scan any real-world color and output it to your display and writing app of your choice – it’s got green power abilities as well.
This stylus has the ability to take the heat from your human hand and convert it into enough energy to keep the pen powered for its relatively low energy needs. With wireless connections unnamed as of yet, we must assume that some tech-forward Bluetooth or Wi-fi bond will be used to get the pen’s knowledge of colors to the tablet, Wacom pad, or computer of your choice.

Viewing 3D cinema is a truly gripping experience but for the 3D glasses! Besides being heavy and awkward for those already wearing numbered glasses, they are a material waste and pose a health hazard. Stix offers an easy solution by being a pair of self-adhesive sticker 3D viewing films. Simply slap them onto your current numbered glasses and enjoy your 3D movie.
The stickers are cut out a shape bigger than average glasses to ensure they cover till the rim. The concept’s approach resonates with me, since I wear glasses too and find wearing additional glasses a hassle. Hopefully the sticker in Stix will be easy to peel off and then we are assured of a winner here!
