Best of Yanko Design 2011



Steve Jobs hired designer Hartmut Esslinger as the modern-day Snow White for his projects code-named after the seven dwarfs. The vision was to infuse Apple products with “born-in-America gene” and DNA inspired by “Hollywood and music, a bit of rebellion and natural *** appeal.” Hartmut’s mantra was simple, “Form follows emotion,” a twist on the maxim that form follows function. Yanko Design respects both these aphorisms but believes that we should not limit creativity within the realms of form, function and emotions; thus we follow Form Beyond Function.

2011 has been a significant year in terms of historical uprisings, financial stability, nature’s rebuke and the loss of visionaries. However the silver lining to the gloom is the perseverance of our belief that the best is yet to come.

Pop Goes the Weasel!

In this case it’s a plug; The PumPing Tap is a spring-loaded socket that ejects a plug when the appliance is switched off. What this means is that residual power is being conserved and wastage of electricity, curbed. So when you finish using an appliance or device and turn its power off, but haven’t unplugged the device, a ring of light appears on the socket. Ten minutes later, the socket automatically ejects the plug; just like toast popping up from a toaster!

Got The Power

All ye weary travelers with a strolley in tow; I understand your pain for finding available sockets, just to juice up ye gadgets. Ah, I suck at poetry but you get my drift right? So here we have a trolley suitcase that harnesses kinetic energy via its wheels and then with an easy dock, juices up your gadgets. Even if it’s just for few precious minutes, I think it’s a neat-o idea!

Ivy That We Like

The Light Ivy is a clever lamp that features wire made from strong yet lightweight craft wire. The purpose is to expose the meandering electric wire of this lamp in a creative way. Usually we end up concealing the mess, but this nifty design ensures you have some fun with it. The lamp head rotates 180 degrees, making it the perfect accomplice for direct, indirect, diffused or table lighting. Awesome!

I resonate with the need for the Car Compass because I have been in this situation once. A friend had parked his hired car in the public car park and he forgot which floor it was on. We literally had to go to each floor of the 10 floors to figure out where the car was. Now if we had something like this Car Compass key then it would have guided us to the exact location of the car, using arrows and pointers on it’s display. Sometimes beeps and flashing lights are just not effective enough!

About the same size as a Mini Cooper and twice as fast, the Megacity Aviation concept was designed to transport goods rapidly through cities with major gridlock. The majority of the biofiber reinforced bioplastic frame is hollow like the bones of a bird, making it incredibly lightweight. Powered by two hydraulically operated coaxial rotors, it’s highly maneuverable and can carry up to 200kg.

response to the growing problem of pollution and the threat it poses to little ones, the Cocoon pillow aims to reduce exposure to both polluted air and chronic noise. The device uses state-of-the-art noise canceling technology, a HEPA air filtration system, and an air particle ioniser to protect babies from loud sounds, germs, and contaminated air particles, ensuring they get a peaceful and healthy sleep. The LG Finestra is a display-charging cradle-Smartphone concept. What we have here is a display with a charging cradle and the ability to sync with the Smartphone so that you can access your social sites at whim. The advantage is that you can manipulate the display to showcase pictures as a window display and enjoy different sceneries. The phone beams out a virtual keyboard for easy navigation.

Designer Zhi Min Lin’s prediction for the future of ground transportation is that cities will become so crowded & dense that new streets will eventually change from the current 2D flat roads into a 3D U shape to utilize limited space. The U-Wall Lizard is a vehicle adapted for driving on these new roads. Four independently powered wheels, expandable clawed tires & a unique suspension system allow it to grip terrain on both horizontal & highly angled surfaces all while balancing the body of the vehicle.
