SURGERY LIGHTING
BRANDON MEDICAL
Market Research
Surgeons demand 100x more light than normal task lighting and they demand it without heat. This is because they work on red tissue and the human eye is weakest in the red part of the spectrum. This problem is compounded by removing infra-red heat, as IR-Filters also cut out a large part of the visible red spectrum.
Brandon Medical’s HD-LED technology has enabled the first surgical lighting with a high colour rendition across the full visible spectrum, allowing small differences in tissue to be vivid and vibrant.Astramax projects a light intensity of 130,000 Lux enabling it to compete on power with some of the largest operating lights, however, it is small, elegant and light-weight making it perfectly suited to minor procedures also.Design for ManufactureThanks to a design for manufacture strategy, HJC Design has helped Brandon Medical reduce manufacturing costs by 33% and material costs by 11%, allowing surgeons to have uncompromising surgical lighting performance in a highly economical product.

Recorder is this magic pen that converts your written notes into electronic files and then transfers it to your phone and computer via Bluetooth. I think it’s a great idea and can actually encourage us writers to take to the book and pen more often. I bet authors and illustrators will love it too! My only wish – it auto spellchecks the files.

Digitalized Evergreen Home
E Home concept is a two part series by designers Jeiyong Chun & Hyunjune Yang where they bring forth their ideas of maintaining a well balanced home environment with sufficient greenery to keep the atmosphere cheery and fresh.
Home, Green Home by Jeiyong Chun consists of a family of five modular units (two green towers, one green wall, one green floor and one green stand) that are sustained by SDPCS. In other words a Smart Digital Plant Care System nurtures the plants with the help of a digitally empowered environment.

Hyunjune Yang’s D’Nature is more about a digital walk in the park; I suppose this simulated greenery is more suitable to Google’s office than a house. The good thing about both the concepts is the inclusion of a green space, which is slowly diluting due to rapid urbanization.

Pinch Me!
I know I’m not the only one who’s paid the price for being lazy about hanging up my clothes! I have carelessly stretched out the necks of my shirts because I’d rather force a rigid hanger through the neck rather than come up the bottom. The Pinch hanger is a efficient and easy solution to my problem. Made of a flexible Polypropylene and Elastomer mix, the user only has to pinch the arms together and slide the hanger into place. Speed up the process while preserving your threads!

I love the Paper Dish concept and hope that Dominos or Pizza Hut take up on this idea ASAP. The thang is only a well-cut paper with appropriate perforations, that allow you to slice and devour a pizza slice, without getting your hands messy. The idea is very clever, more like a makeshift paper plate, but worth including in my next box of hot takeaway!

Big cities (like Los Angeles, where I live) are known for their street hot dogs, but I’ve avoided ever trying one because I can’t get over wondering where the heck those guys wash their hands?! For germophobes like me, the Rango Hot Dog Stand was designed with hygiene in mind. It utilizes special food compartments and hands-free condiment dispensers that allow the “building” of the dogs to be done without ever touching the food. It also has a small sink for washing hands!

My iMac is placed facing its back to the wall and plugging in any USB wire is kinda shot-in-the-dark for me. Unless I turn the entire monitor to one side…you get my drift, right? As my struggle continues, I often wonder why couldn’t they design the plug-head to be more instinctive to hook-up. Something like the Eidetic USB; very obvious which way this plug goes in. Plus a random touch to the slot can confirm the way you slide it in. Superb!

Listen to designer Jean-michel Bonnemoy and he’ll have you believe traditional camera form factors were dictated by the need to hold a roll of film in the back. Now that we’re all digital, why are still maintaining that archaism? He maintains the new form factor should be a cylinder – ergonomically better for the hand. The D-CAN concept significantly reduces volume while still providing all the finite controls professional photographers are used to. Hit the jump for the “specs”.
- Large range zoom stabilized USM lens.
- A ring authorizes the focus correction. The focal is lockable.
- Extension cursor for macrophotography
- The lens cap, impossible to lose, includes an electronic flash and the AF-assist illuminator
- The accessory shoe can receive, besides an electronic flash, a directional microphone or a remote control receiver.
- The cursor “function” allows to choose between fixed views or video, pictures reading, intervallometer and power off.
- Cursor “mode” (program, speed or aperture priority, manual)
- Double key ISO (100 to 6400 ISO).
- Sockets for peripheral: microphone, audio headset, power supply.
- The high-definition back screen is used for the aim, the control and the parameter setting by means of a trackball.
- The system of aim offers two configurations:
- - At the level of eye for a precise centring including right in the sun, with precise control of the focus. The magnifier with diopter adjustment gives an image enlarged of the screen.
- - Directly on the directional back screen having raised the magnifier.
- The back block of aim revolves to give access to the memory card, USB and HDMI connectors and energy compartment.
- The lithium battery can be replaced in case of necessity by a set of AA size battery.
- The release button pushed at the halfway mark locks the focus and the exposure.
- Maintained pushed it allows continuous photo mode.
- The function of thumb wheels differs according to the mode:
- - Thumb wheel 1: exposure correction(P, Tv, Av) or choice of the aperture (M).
- - Thumb wheel 2: program shift (P), choice of the shutter speed (Tv, M), of the aperture (Av).

I have a soft spot for wind chimes and love the subtle music they play. On a spiritual level they are supposed to keep negativity away and increase the good vibrations. A bunch of designers have upped their karmic good by designing a lamp based on the principles of the chimes. The only difference is that the wind movement causes the lamp to harness energy to power the lamp rather than sound the soothing “clinks”.

UPDATE: 7 Days Left!
Steve Jobs said “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, everything else is secondary.” Finding the correct channels to promote our creativity or even get them recognized are very limited. Design Competitions are a good medium, but is recognition from peers and prize money the only push you need? The A’Design Award and Competition fills the void by highlighting, advertising and advocating good design, designers and design oriented companies. They have the knack of grabbing the attention of press, interactive medias, design critics, distributers and buyers for their award winners.
So besides your award winning design being presented at the A’ Design Museum and Gallery in Italy, they also offers an unique ecosystem for designers to sell their winning ideas to sponsor companies. Likewise the companies can bid for the competing design ideas and make offers to buy the designs!

Pill Box for Alzheimer Patients
Memo is a portable Pill box for alzheimer patients to remind them when and how many pills to take, thanks to an ingenious use of LEDs. A light with a specific color indicates the color of the box the patient has to take from. Traditionally, medications are divided up using standard trays separated by days but even some advanced patients have a hard time remember what day it is. Made of soft touch rubber, aluminum, a small circuit board, battery and LED lights. It would only cost $20. Good idea?

Driving in 2030
E-Vul is an electric-powered inter-city concept car, designed for the year 2030. Changing environmental issues, living status and the impact of new energy technologies have been taken into consideration while developing this concept. Deriving inspiration from the networking and transportation techniques used by ants, E-Vul Car is proposed to work as a public booking and payment transportation system.
The designers explain, “Users can interact with the system via telephone or Internet, and the service can be linked to the home in order to reduce the use of private cars. A magnetic link is used between each car in order to reduce the consumption of electrical energy. In this way, both short and long-range travel for multiple passengers can be achieved and a more energy-efficient manner. The service connects the Internet and highway system to provide multiple services. The autopilot function reduces the risk of accidents.”

The historic city of Prague has many sights to take in, for example the Prague Castle, the picturesque Charles Bridge or the Astronomical Clock. During the Iron Curtain era, it was one of the most visited cities of Europe. Although reliant on a tram and metro system, one of the best modes for transport is the taxi. Based on this observation was a recent event called the Prague Taxi Design and two really outstanding entries are listed after the jump….

Taxi Visitor is based on the premise that tourists driving into the city from the airport, like to enjoy a ride where they can take in the sights and sounds on the first go. The abundant spacing and height of the cab allow for a full view and cast and everlasting impression. The color schemes for the cab are inspired by the beige plaster of the Lesser Town houses and their darker retaining wall.

Time Gets More Linear
The Lineær (sic) clock is like any standard wall clock except behind the minimalist facade is bevy of parts filled with symbolism. The time is written on a a rotating scroll. That represents that time is in perpetuity. The fixed hand symbolizes the present. There’s nothing fancy about it. No illumination or digital displays. It’s as quiet as time itself. Of course, if you’re one to find all this a bit too simplistic. Take heart in the fact that the face plates can be made in any/many colors.

Big hat tip for the design. Huge improvement over current buoys. Who knew they needed to be redesigned? Oh and by the way, it holds the Design Turkey Award. Mmmm hmmm.

You must be familiar with the culture of eating insects as delicacies but the truth is that they are a staple in many societies. We have here two projects that go beyond the nutritional power of insects and looks into how their farming can help in the infrastructural setup of the urban jungle, as we know it. Come have a look….
Urban bug farming shortens the production and consumption chain. This project proposes a special farming unit for two species of edible insects: crickets and wheatworms. Beyond the production of bugs for food, these farming installations aim to support urban infrastructure systems such as lighting and waste processing. Crickets are bred on alveolar (cavity) walls that replicate their natural environment. Each cylindrical cricket-farming unit surrounds a light source to optimize the farming yield. It is hung high off the ground to reduce its spatial impact and to keep it out of reach. The district cricket farm incorporates several units and is set up in a market place. The ‘farmer’ who feeds the crickets collects fresh food waste from the market and surrounding restaurants. When it is dark, the cricket farming unit doubles as an urban lighting system. In the future sustainable city; traditional urban noises will be progressively replaced by that of nature.
Wheatworm farming units are located in offices and fed by employees with waste paper. The paper is a particular type of special office paper adapted to worm growth. It is made of cellulose and wheat cuticles, and printed with vegetable and organic inks. The unit works as a digestive system, performing the double tasks of paper shredding and farming support. Paper is directly recycled inside the company in order to produce food proteins.

will be a happy man the day that we can not only rid ourselves of coins and cash, but shed our plastic cards as well and rely on our mobile completely on our mobile devices! Le sigh… Until then I will still have to keep using a clever case like the iPUP here. It’s gotta be the cutest one I’ve ever seen and unlike other cases it won’t damage your card’s security strip. Carry your ID, credit cards or transportation cards conveniently, safely, and in a unique puppy-fied style! Designer: Yun Seong Kim

From one of my favorite designers, Robert van Embricqs, the Rising Table is the latest in a series of sculptural furniture elements that are not only functionally genius but also aesthetically fascinating. Like the rest of the Rising Series, the table utilizes a unique slat-folding technique to transform from a flat piece of seemingly solid wood to a fully functional table with an intricate web of wonderful angles and angular shapes that are a signature of this remarkable designer.

I never think of food scales needing to be redesigned but gone are the days when one could leisurely walk into a deli or butcher shop and discuss the finer details of food while waiting for their meats to be prepared. We live in a hyper fast reality and that means just enough time to get in and get out. The Avery Retail Scales bring touchscreens, RFID tags and wireless goodies to the table but does it make for a better experience?
What’s it do? In a nutshell, you have a food scale with a detachable, wirelessly connected touchpad that can offer up suggestions on foods and flavors that compliment each other. You’d be surprised how many people don’t understand which wines best accompany a salmon steak. I sure didn’t until guess who told me? Yes my local fishmonger. But that’s just one person who can’t possibly split their time between all the customers in line. This device can also detect RFID chips in food packaging. All this information is supposed to give shoppers collective and instant access to the experienced recommendations of the sales staff along with cooking tips, sales, current offers, health and nutrition info.

Cleaning a whisk can be a challenge, especially if you are working with a sticky mixture or thick dough. Divisible is a clever design that addresses this issue, as well as the storage. The whisk simple splits in half, straightening the curvy wires and facilitating easy cleaning. By far the most hygienic cleaning solution, demonstrated brilliantly in the accompanying video.
