Designed with outdoor workers in mind, the Lumus heater is an innovative, mobile single-person heating system that uses a built-in heating coil and integrated fan to produce a “heat cone” around the user, keeping them toasty in even the most frigid of weather. Simply stand on the dot to activate the unit. No open flame and no CO2 production make it a great way to keep warm indoors too.

This thoughtful design is the result of an observation into human routine and our unique desire to organize objects. Certain objects like the dustpan, broom and waste-bin often get thrown in odd places or awkward corners, giving them a “homeless” feel or appearance. This combo solution focuses on the relationship of these 3 items, combining them into one codependent unit that looks as good as it is useful. Trust, it’s genius.

Sajjadah 1426 – Prayer Rug by Soner Ozenc
A prayer rug is a small and portable carpet that Muslims put on the floor when they perform their prayers. Its main function is to provide a clean and isolated platform for the prayer. With the specific patterns on its surface, it also aims to bring the atmosphere of a mosque to wherever they take it.
Muslims pray five times a day. The only product they need to perform their prayers is a prayer rug. And there is one thing they need to be careful about: the holy city of Mecca a” the direction towards which they should perform their prayers.
As one of the main aims of a~Sajjadah 1426′ was to emphasize the values of the patterns on the prayer rug, lighting those patterns up was considered as the main approach from the very first stages of the concept. There were several technology alternatives to achieve this effect: mini LEDs, fibre optics, EL wire embroidery and EL panel. After the experiments done, the most appropriate one turned out to be the Electro Luminescent Phosphore Printing technology. EL wire embroidery has also been explored during the research part and a~mini glow wire’ was ordered from the UK-based company Surelight Ltd.
‘Sajjadah 1426′ indicates the direction via the data coming from a compass module embedded inside it. The closer to the direction of Mecca it is turned, the brighter the patterns illuminate.
‘Sajjadah 1426′ enriches the praying experience with the illuminated patterns on its surface. The word ‘sajjadah’ is a Persian/Turkish word meaning ‘prayer rug’ and the number ’1426′ stands for ’2005′ in Islamic calendar.

The Airborne Avalanche Rescue System by designer Tatjana Rolle aims to decrease crucial emergency rescue times after avalanches by utilizing autonomous airborne drones to detect and mark the position of victims. Immediately following the avalanche, the activated drone leaves its solar charging station, scouts the area and tags the positions with bright paint so rescuers can recover victims without delay.
A sensor grid and the AARA drones at their base stations are installed in a range of avalanche endangered zones avalanche, making it possible to detect avalanches immediately. The cross-linked sensors are able to locate the exact position of the run-out zone of an avalanche, activate the drones and alert the mountain rescue service. Approaching the site the drone starts its locating-mode. If it finds a victim, the drone assigns the place with a color mark. The rescue team is able to start the retrieval directly.
The AARA-drones are based in autarkic stations. These not only shelter the drones, but also serve as a node between the cross-linked avalanche detectors, AARA and the mountain rescue service. This is where all information converges. Solar modules ensure the electric power supply. AARA is protected by a dome which opens up in case of emergency. The station’s platform contains a charging cradle to recharge the batteries of the drone.
Alongside the precise and steady flight, AARA has to manage its job as a positioning drone. It has a GPS for navigation and an ultrasonic sensor for distance measurement. The positioning is done by the already established RECCO-System. It works with passive reflectors and active detectors. The reflectors independence of energy is the main advantage so they can be integrated easily and are cost-efficient to the ski-equipment. In addition, AARA wireless communication to exchange data with the mountain rescue service and the base station, as well as a magazine of color cartridges to mark the find spot.
The shell is a kind of exoskeleton which protects the technical components while also serving as main supporting structure. As a material an ultra-light composite material like carbon fibre comes into consideration. Characteristic properties like the variable flight and the central and therefore protected thrust unit are the center points the design is based on. The design of AARA is as different as its unconventional flight technology in reference to common drone appearances.

The VJ CAM is specifically designed for video journalists, but I think most of us can benefit from it. The idea is to cut down the crew who handle the videography…mostly due to the current recession. The camcorder is built as modules and can be configured in a manner that suits the journalist. Each function is contained within a different module and the modules can be simply connected and interchanged according the requirements. For example the handle is an individual module, which can be positioned wherever it fits personal ergonomics best. The display is placed as a foldaway “hood” above the lens. An interesting concept that may work for the industry, what do you think?

The Leaf hanger set consists of five steel rings of different size that anchor to wall on one side, making it suitable for a variety of uses depending on which way the user anchors it. It’s quite the trend to have suitcases with an expandable hood to accommodate more clothes and stuff. However very few have stopped to consider vacuum packing clothes, to make more space. The Pumpack is one such suitcase design where it includes a pump that helps to compress clothes to make more packing room. For those who are going to complain about creases, I suggest you carry a travel iron. I for one think we need to develop this design thoroughly!
Pumpack is a 2011 red dot design concept winner.

Electronic Pen steps up the game for pens that measure as you use them. Not only does include a ***y display that is powered by kinetic means, it also features a specialized design to prevent the display from getting damaged. I like the simple thought process behind the design; surely makes rulers a thing of the past!

Food delivery containers are usually made of paper, plastic or foam. They’re quick to make, cheap to produce and provide very little incentive to reuse. The Eco Bowls are designed to quick assemble down into separate components to be easier for disposal. They also happen to look good enough to keep and reuse so my question is, why wouldn’t you?

Read, Conquer and Share
It’s the digital age and social media is our new friend. Sites like Facebook already let our friends know what online newspaper or article we are reading, so it’s only natural for technology to want to bridge the gap between the surreal and paper. The next time you have a book in hand and want to immediately tweet a quote; you’ll probably have something like the Kuote to help you out.
This nifty device is adept at copy-pasting text from paper to the digital world, thanks to its Internet connectivity and intuitive micro lens beneath the glass surface.
Here is how it works, “to use Kuote, place this piece of glass on anything that has text on it. The micro lens inside will reflect the image beneath to the embedded camera. The optical character recognition (OCR) technology can detect the edge of each character and translate it into a digital text format. Circumnavigate the edge of the hole with your finger to move the cursor, and then select the text with a finger drag. The text will be highlighted as if you were using a marker. Swipe upwards with two fingers to use this selected text for a Tweet or a Facebook message, or save a note in your could storage service. More gestures can be pre-set to activate a specific service. Swing the Kuote to reset it.”
Kuote won the 2011 red dot design concept award.

Syringe for Safe Injection
The One Time Injection Needle aims to help prevent accidental and intentional misuse, both of which contribute to the spread of disease such as HIV And Hepatitis C. In this design, the safety cap must be pulled back to insert the needle. Once retracted, the cap will stay in place to indicate prior use. Additionally, liquid-activated letters read “USED” once in contact with blood or another fluid.

It’s quite the trend to look for ways to extend the life of a battery, be it a AAA, AA or even the D-size. What we have here today is the ONE=TWO – Spring Battery. The design is quite self explanatory, so my question for you today is this: is it worth extracting every ounce of juice from discarded batteries in comparison to the production of such extracting devices? What do you say…..
One = Two is a 2011 red dot design concept winning entry.
