US tries to spin Iran's role in NY

A senior US official has attempted to put a negative spin on Iran's role at the NPT review conference in New York.

On Friday, the director of policy planning at the US State Department, Anne-Marie Slaughter, said she saw Iran's actions at the conference as a sign that it is worried.

Addressing the 2010 Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad criticized the United States, Britain, and France for failing to fulfill their commitments as signatories to the NPT and said their silence about Israel's nuclear arsenal is an example of their double-standard policy.

He also called on the White House to dismantle its nuclear bases around the globe.

Slaughter described Iran's actions at the New York summit as signs of Iran's 'embarrassment'.

"President Ahmadinejad coming to the UN, the dinner last night… I read these as signs that the government is quite worried," AFP quoted the State Department official as telling diplomats and foreign service staff in a speech broadcast to journalists .

"They are always trying to block, but… they are even more actively engaging right now to try to stop anything that will make them more isolated," she said. "I read that as some sign of our success."

During his speech, President Ahmadinejad said the United States, despite being a signatory to the NPT, is the "main suspect" responsible for the stockpiling and proliferation of nuclear weapons and noted that the US has even threatened to attack other nations with nuclear weapons.

His speech at the conference prompted the delegates of the United States, Britain, and France to stage a walk-out.

The speech was followed by a surprise move by Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, who hosted senior diplomats from the 15 members of the UN Security Council at a dinner reception at the residence of the Iranian ambassador to the UN in New York on Thursday.

During the meeting, the Iranian foreign minister told the ambassadors and other high-ranking officials that Tehran is determined to continue its civilian nuclear energy program.

Prior to Slaughter's comments, other US officials described the dinner "as another opportunity for Iran to show the council that it is prepared to meet its obligations and play by international rules," The Daily Telegraph reported.

The United States, Britain, and France have been seeking to convince the two other permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and Russia, to support the efforts to impose a fourth round of sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program
