Dear Professor….,
I have applied for Ph.D. program in Chemical Engineering for the fall 2013 at the XXX institute. I've been admitted to the UBC in Canada for Ph.D. program but I'm much more interested and passionate to join your group.
I am a senior dual major student (Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering) from Sharif University of Technology, which is the best University in Iran.
I am really interested in theoretical chemistry. I have had the privilege of following your research closely in the last few months. I have read many papers published by your group and am fascinated by the questions you seek to answer by Theoretical methods (i.e. Semiclassical theories and Statistical Thermodynamics). Particularly, I’m deeply fascinated by the “Bimolecular Recombination Reactions: Low Pressure Rates in Terms of Time-Dependent Survival Probabilities, Total J Phase Space Sampling of Trajectories, and Comparison with RRKM Theory” project that is developed in your group. I took a graduate course, Statistical Thermodynamics, under supervision of Professor Parsafar to understand better what the articles are about. My mechanical engineering background with those courses like vibration will help me to gain a deeper understanding of theories and intermolecular interaction and bonding.
My chemistry GPA is 3.96/4 and my total GPA, which includes Mechanical engineering and chemistry courses, is 3.85/4. I have 2 years of research experience in mechanical engineering (aerosol generators) and chemistry (CdSe quantum dots). My iBT TOEFL Score is 99 (Reading: 29, Listening: 24, Speaking: 22, and Writing: 24), and my score in GRE Subject test (in chemistry), is 860 which is 90% below. My GRE General Revised version Scores are as follows: verbal: 149 (40%), quantitative: 170 (99%), and analytic writing: 3 (11%).
During the last two years I have worked on manufacturing Micro Vibrating Orifice Aerosol Generator (AKA Micro VOAG), CdSe Quantum Dots synthesize, and recently simulation of droplet on the arc fiber. Micro VOAG is capable of producing mono disperse droplets which leads to mono disperse Nano to Micro particles. I also conducted a research on simulation of falling a droplet on a fiber by openFOAM and now I am going to simulate it in Surfer program. I am familiar with NAMD as well.
I have been the physical organic TA for 2 semesters and I am the first undergraduate TA whom have been ever assigned for this course. I was also a General Chemistry TA for 4 semesters.
There are some projects as well which I have completed during my career as a bachelor student. These are further detailed in my CV.
Working in group and under your supervision would allow me to pursue my scientific passion: better understanding of theoretical chemistry, specifically by working on Statistical Thermodynamics and Kinetics. With my diverse skill set, I'm confident I can significantly contribute to the projects in your group and would be privileged to discuss this further with you. My CV is attached for your review and I appreciate your consideration.
Sincerely,
